Laparoscopy at a Glance

by dr. Pande Made Doddy Haryadi, S.Ked.

It is well known that laparoscopy is the result of advances in medical engineering. Laparoscopic surgery has also been recognized for drastically reducing the chances of complications due to open surgical procedures. There are two types of uses for laparoscopy: diagnostic and operative. For diagnostics, you may opt for this laparoscopy in order to assess whether the oviduct is blocked. Laparoscopy can be used to surgically remove cysts, myomas, and remove adhesions on the reproductive organs. Other operative measures that can be performed are uterine removal and tubectomy.

WHY LAPAROSCOPY?

Laparoscopic surgery has many advantages for mothers or families who choose this technique. The benefits include:

  1. Minimally invasive surgical technology
  2. Faster healing resulting in shorter hospital stays
  3. Shorter periods of postoperative discomfort
  4. Postoperative wounds are cosmetically better than open surgery
  5. Lower risk of bleeding compared to open surgery
  6. There is less risk of infection compared to open surgery

LAPAROSCOPIC PROCEDURE

Laparoscopic surgery is a surgical technique or minimally invasive surgery that is performed by making a hole (0.5 – 1 cm in diameter) around the patient’s abdomen. The hole is used to insert a device equipped with a high-resolution camera to transfer images inside the abdominal cavity to a monitor screen that will help the doctor during the surgery process. Once completed, the hole will be closed and with minimal scarring, faster healing and cosmetically, the scar left behind is much better than open surgery.
