Varicocele is the dilation of the veins (called pampiniform plexus) located in the sac of the testicles (called scrotum), which is one of the common causes that result in fathers becoming infertile.[1] Difficulty having children is estimated to be a problem involving 15% of couples worldwide.[2,3] Fathers with varicocele will have an increased risk for difficulty having children in primary 19-41% and secondary 45-85%.[2] The causes of varicocele itself are various, such as urinary tract infections, metabolic disorders, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, radiation, cell phone use, excessive exercise, environmental pollution, and psychological stress.[1-3]
ABOUT VARICOCELE
Varicocele interferes with the father’s fertility and can cause difficulty in having children. This happens because varicocele disrupts the quality of the father’s sperm fluid. To prevent this, it is usually necessary to see a father’s doctor for repair or treatment. As the varicocele is treated, improvements in sperm quality, pregnancy outcomes, and reproductive hormone development usually follow.[4]
When you have a varicocele, you may not experience any symptoms at first, but when the varicocele gets worse, you may experience some of the following: [5]
- Pain or discomfort in the sac region.
- The complaint is worse with standing or strenuous physical activity.
- In severe varicocele, there will be a worm-like sensation on the testicles or even a squiggly appearance when viewed.
- Impaired sperm quality making it more difficult to have children.
PROCEDURE
In performing a varicocele examination in a room at room temperature. The doctor will assess your testicles in a standing position for approximately 5 minutes and may ask you to strain slightly to complete the relevant examination. The examination may then proceed to the supporting ultrasound stage if any medical findings are found and/or to confirm the severity of the varicocele.[5] When the examination has been performed, Dad will be informed by the doctor of the results. If Dad and Mom are planning to do a screening before marriage or check for a long childless condition, Mom and Dad can make a reservation in advance on the Sobat Bunda application. By downloading the application and making a reservation at Sobat Bunda, you can find out the estimated queue time or turn to enter the examination, so that you do not have to wait long at the hospital.
